Potential applications where Red Clover
may be helpful to those suffering symptoms:
-
premenstrual tension (especially when
associated with oestrogen excess)
-
enlarged prostate and other prostate
disorders
-
cellular protection
-
coughs and general respiratory congestion
-
bronchitis
Red Clover is a source of phytoestrogens
which are often used to help maintain healthy hormone balance in women
and in men.
Female Hormonal Tonic
If the levels of oestrogen are too high,
the herb's comparatively weak phytoestrogenic isoflavones (1,000 weaker)
can occupy receptors that otherwise could have been occupied by the
much stronger hormone. If the oestrogen activity in the body is too
low, phytoestrogens can exert a mild positive oestrogenic effect.
Prostate Protective
As excessive oestrogen activity is also
associated with prostate dysfunction (such as enlarged prostate) the
oestrogen-blocking capabilities of red clover's phytoestrogenic isoflavones
are thought to be of potential benefit.
Cell Protective
The phytoestrogenic isoflavones have been
very thoroughly studied with respect to their potential cell-protecting
abilities. The research suggests a number of relevant mechanisms for
this protective effect, including inhibition of certain cell damaging
agents (e.g. free radicals) and inhibition of adverse cellular changes.
Anti-bacterial
Laboratory tests on red clover have shown
it to possess activity against a variety of pathogenic bacteria.
Expectorant
Although research has yet to clearly explain
the reasons for this use, one of the most prominent historical uses
of red clover is as an expectorant in clearing respiratory congestion
in cases of coughs and other bronchial conditions.

Herbs
For thousands of years, herbs have been used to help maintain many aspects of health
and wellness. Today, research and technology are bringing herbalism into the modern
age – with improved extraction, standardization, and farming methods. Clinical studies
are beginning to validate herbal therapies, so even some in the medical community
are starting to accept them.
Many of today’s medicines
were originally derived from botanicals. Aspirin once came from the white willow
tree, quinine from the bark of the cinchona tree, and digitalis from foxglove. Herbs
are still the basis for Chinese medicine and are important constituents of many
European natural remedies. As Hippocrates said, “Let they food by thy medicine,
thy medicine be thy food”.
Some of the herbs
available on this site are wild-crafted – grown in the wild – while others are meticulously
cultivated on herb farms.
