Why is Calendula Complex
needed?
Lymphatic herbs are used
as part of a detoxification process that clears excess wastes and toxins
from the liver, kidneys, tissues and lymphatic system.
All the cells in the body are bathed in
tissue fluid, which is the 'middle man' between the blood and the tissues:
all interchange of nourishment and waste products between them takes place
through the medium of this fluid. Tissue fluid drains into lymphatic vessels
that run parallel to arteries and veins, transporting the fluid - that now
becomes 'lymph' - to lymph nodes, where cells called macrophages break down
bacteria and wastes.
The lymph relies on the action of muscles
and the lungs to move around the body. If physical activity is restricted or
the level of toxins in the system becomes too great for the lymph nodes to
deal with, congestion can occur. Acne, swollen lymph glands, glandular fever
and general lethargy can all result from this situation.
Avoiding red meat, dairy products, sugar,
alcohol and fried food will help, as will taking cleansing herbs such as
Calendula.

Calendula officinalis (Marigold) is high in
flavonoids that have an anti-inflammatory action. It also contains
terpenoids, resin, volatile oils and other constituents such as bitters and
polysaccharides. Its immunostimulant activity is thought to be due to the
polysaccharide fractions.
Traditionally, Calendula has been used as
an anti-inflammatory and for wound healing. These actions may make it useful
for conditions like Crohn's Disease, where the reduction in inflammation
reduces gut permeability. The external use of Calendula for skin lesions is
well known, but the healing effect also applies internally, eg for gastric
ulcers. Its resin content has led to it being indicated for inflammatory
conditions in the mouth, throat and upper digestive tract, as well as lymph
problems and recurrent infections.
Calendula's lymphatic action is a
significant aid to detoxification mechanisms. Calendula is a cholagogue
(increases the flow of bile), which, added to its depurative (blood
purifying) effect, makes it ideal for conditions where the lymph nodes are
swollen or the lymph has become sluggish, causing skin conditions such as
acne.
Viola tricolour (Wild Pansy) has a
non-specific cleansing action that may be beneficial in many skin
conditions.
Echinacea purpurea (Purple Coneflower)
improves immune function and is well known for its positive effect on the
skin.
