This product may have the following benefits

(please read this important notice concerning supplement medical claims)

May be helpful for symptoms of:

  • Asthma
  • Stress incontinence and bedwetting

Asthma is a reversible obstructive airways disease of varying severity, which is characterised by widespread narrowing of the airways. The main symptoms are breathlessness, wheezing and chest 'tightness'. A cough is commonly present, often accompanied by thick sputum (catarrh).

The symptoms are caused by constriction of bronchial smooth muscle, oedema resulting from an inflammatory swelling of the bronchial mucous membranes, an increase in the secretion of mucus and blockage of the smaller bronchi with mucus plugs.

There is an inherited tendency to develop asthma. A family history of eczema, hayfever and food allergies can often be found.

Factors which can be responsible for triggering an asthma attack include environmental allergies, e.g. pollen, viral infections, exercise, dust and irritants, emotional upset and certain drugs.

Mode of Action

  • Expectorant
  • Leukocytosis - increased numbers of white blood cells
  • High silica content
  • Astringent

Galeopsis contains large amounts of silica, saponins and tannins. The silicic acid content increases non specific lung resistance to allergens and pathogens through leukocytosis (a temporary increase in white blood cells).

Silica is of great importance in the regeneration of tissue. High concentrations are normally found in the trachea and lung tissue. Levels decrease with ageing and respiratory tract disease, so the requirement becomes greater.

The saponins have an expectorant action which enhances expulsion of phlegm from the lungs. This has a beneficial effect in cases of asthma, chronic bronchitis and other chest complaints.

Galeopsis may also be useful for stress incontinence and bedwetting through the astringent action of tannins in 'toning' tissue.

Herbs
For thousands of years, herbs have been used to help maintain many aspects of health and wellness. Today, research and technology are bringing herbalism into the modern age – with improved extraction, standardization, and farming methods. Clinical studies are beginning to validate herbal therapies, so even some in the medical community are starting to accept them.

Many of today’s medicines were originally derived from botanicals. Aspirin once came from the white willow tree, quinine from the bark of the cinchona tree, and digitalis from foxglove. Herbs are still the basis for Chinese medicine and are important constituents of many European natural remedies. As Hippocrates said, “Let they food by thy medicine, thy medicine be thy food”.

Some of the herbs available on this site are wild-crafted – grown in the wild – while others are meticulously cultivated on herb farms.
