The Ginkgo tree is probably the world's
oldest species of tree. Its medicinal use can be traced to the oldest
Chinese Materia Medica dating back to around 3,000 BC. Traditional
Chinese medicine describes the ability of Ginkgo leaves to 'benefit
the brain'.
Today, Ginkgo extracts are among the
most widely prescribed phytomedicines in both Germany and France.
Mode of Action:
- Inhibits platelet aggregation
- Antioxidant
- Stabilises cell membranes
- Improves oxygen and glucose utilisation
by the tissues
- Reduces arteriolar spasm
There are a number of compounds which
may be isolated from Ginkgo Biloba.
Terpenes account for about 6% of Ginkgo
extracts and exist as ginkgolides and bilobalides. These substances
increase arterial blood supply, especially to the brain, enhancing tissue
utilisation of oxygen and glucose.
Effective brain function requires a large
amount of energy, which is dependent on a constant supply of glucose
and oxygen. If the circulation to the brain is impeded, a chain reaction
is triggered which may eventually lead to cell and tissue damage and
even the death of these structures.
Ginkgolides inhibit a substance called
platelet activating factor (PAF), which is responsible for platelet
aggregation and clot formation. PAF is also involved in many inflammatory
and allergic reactions which cause arteriolar spasm and reduce blood
supply.
This substance has also recently been
implicated in acute asthmatic attacks and it has been suggested by some
clinicians that Ginkgo may be of benefit to asthmatics.
Other constituents of Ginkgo which have
significant action include the flavonoid compounds.
Cell membranes contain unsaturated fatty
acids which are susceptible to attack by free radicals. Ginkgo has been
found to have antioxidant activity, being a free radical scavenger,
protecting cells from damage. Cells of the central nervous system are
particularly vulnerable to the effects of free radicals as they contain
a higher proportion of cell membranes.
Ginkgo has been extensively studied in
both laboratory and clinical trials. It is of great interest to note
that the whole extract of the plant is more active than the individual
components. This implies a high degree of synergy between the various
chemical components, and supports one of the fundamental principles
of Phytotherapy.
