How does St. John's Wort work?
There is little doubt that Hypericum works
by influencing the neurotransmitters in the brain.
The substances responsible for this action
are thought to be hypericin and hyperforin.
However, it is widely accepted that the
action of the herb cannot be assigned to a specific constituent, but is
rather the balanced effect of all the substances within the plant.
It has also been suggested that the action
of Hypericum is mediated through the reduction in the number of
serotonin receptors.
Hypericum has also been found to contain
flavonoids which possess analgesic action in those suffering with nerve
pain, e.g. neuralgia, shingles and sciatica.
Ingredients
in Hypericum (St John's Wort) tincture:
Tincture of organically grown fresh flower heads of St John's Wort (Hypericum
perforatum), extracted in alcohol (66% v/v).
Ingredients in Hypericum (St
John's Wort) tablets:
Extract of organically grown fresh Hypericum perforatum (St John’s Wort)
flower heads. Also contains microcrystalline cellulose, maize starch, soya
polysaccharide and hydrated cottonseed oil. Each 275mg tablet contains the
equivalent of 1000mg of fresh Hypericum perforatum providing 330mg of
hypericin.
In recent years, the
incidence of depression has been on the increase.
Hopelessness, dejection, loss of self
esteem, difficulty in concentrating and sleep disturbance are some of the
features associated with depression.
Hypericum, if taken over a longer period of
time, has a beneficial effect on mild to moderate depressive states without
the potential for addiction, and with virtually no side effects.
SADs are depressive disorders triggered by
an imbalance in the neurotransmitters found in the brain, probably resulting
from a lack of sunlight.
Restrictions for use:
Hypericum (St John's Wort) preparations may
interfere with certain prescribed medication.
Patients on prescribed medication should
therefore consult their doctor or pharmacist before using Hypericum.
Patients currently taking Hypericum who are subsequently prescribed
medication or buy medicine from a pharmacy, must tell their doctor or
pharmacist that they are taking Hypericum.
Exposure to the sun while taking
Hypericum may result in a skin reaction. This is more common when Hypericum
is applied externally.
