Our digestive
system is colonised by billions of bacteria and most of them are harmless.
However, during times of stress, travel, illness, changes in the diet, and
taking antibiotics, the unfriendly, pathogenic bacteria sometimes overwhelm
the friendly bacteria. In these situations, practitioners frequently
recommend the use of probiotics (capsules containing beneficial bacteria
such as Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium bifidum).
Each gelatin-free capsule of Lamberts® Acidophilus Extra 4 contains 4
billion friendly bacteria, which is the same level of live bacteria found in
8 full pots of a leading supermarket brand of bio-yoghurt!
Lamberts use the beneficial Lactobacillus acidophilus La-5 and
Bifidobacterium Bb12 strains of bacteria (the most popular strains used in
clinical studies). The bacteria are freeze dried with an acid stable
polysaccharide matrix that helps protect them from stomach acid by up to 50
times!
And whilst this product is stable at room temperature, to ensure maximum
potency, we store it in refrigerated conditions until dispatch. A desiccant
sachet is also included in every pot to avoid moisture spoiling viability.
It is these extras such as the acid stable polysaccharide matrix, the
refrigerated conditions until dispatch and the desiccant sachet in every pot
that ensure the product meets the claims on the label. |

Probiotics and beneficial bacteria
Researchers estimate that more than 400
species of bacteria inhabit the digestive tract. Some of these are the
pathogenic, or disease-producing, bacteria. But other species are considered
“friendly” bacteria. To an extent, digestive tract health depends on the
condition of the friendly bacteria and the control they exert over the less
friendly, pathogenic variety.
Friendly bacteria are often referred to as probiotics for their multiple,
interacting benefits. Some friendly bacteria, such as bifidobacteria can thrive
only in oxygen-free environments. Others, such as Lactobacillus acidophilus,
require small amounts of oxygen and are known as microaerophilic organisms. As a
result, friendly bacteria have the potential to play several roles.
Friendly bacteria produce acetic, lactic and formic acids which lower the pH in
the intestine, thereby inhibiting growth of undesirable bacteria and enhancing
the nutritional status by helping to digest food and manufacture essential
vitamins.

Lamberts
Lamberts is the UK's
leading supplier of food supplements to health professionals. All
Lamberts product formulations are based on an in-depth understanding
of the latest nutritional research. Their strategy is to develop
only those products that are supported by a valid scientific
rationale and this has led health professionals to rely on Lamberts
for nutritional and herbal supplements that provide relevant levels
of active ingredients. Lamberts products are produced in their own
factory which is one of the most modern and technically advanced in
Europe and which operates to stringent pharmaceutical standards of
Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) and is approved by the UK
Department of Health, Medicines Control Agency. Each product
manufactured by Lamberts is subjected to a series of rigorous tests
ranging from analysis of the raw materials through to tests on the
product whilst it is being made as well as the finished product
itself to ensure they meet the specifications given on the label.
Lamberts work in conjunction with several research departments at
Universities through the UK to conduct studies on a number of topics
ranging from the use of magnesium in asthma through to
anthocyanidins and fluid retention. Many of Lamberts products are of
a higher potency than you would normally find in retail products.
The reason for this is that the active ingredients in their products
are included at relevant levels as opposed to just token levels.
