Potential applications of Ginkgo biloba: More About Ginkgo Biloba Ginkgo Biloba is probably one of the best-known herbs in all of Europe today with perhaps 20 million regular users across the continent. The Ginkgo tree, also known as the Maidenhair Tree, is said to be the oldest plant species on earth; it was widespread at the time of the dinosaurs 250 million years ago. It is not vulnerable to fungi, insects or storms. Indeed, following the dropping of the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima on 6th August 1945 a Ginkgo tree, not more than a mile from the point of impact, was the first of all plants to put out a green shoot, a tender sign of life in that scarred and scalded earth. During the last 25 years there have been over 500 scientific studies on the therapeutic use of Ginkgo Biloba. They have generally concentrated on the ginkgo-flavon-glycosides, for the anti-oxidant effect, and on the terpine lactones (ginkgolides and bilobalides) which increase vasodilation and protect nerve cells. Their effect is greater peripheral blood flow in capillary vessels and end-arteries. Although many benefits of Ginkgo Biloba are, like Nature herself, slow-acting, one paper showed that, within as little as one hour after taking the herb, there was a significant increase in alpha- and beta-wave patterns. These markers for brain activity are crucial for short-term memory, and the capacity to grasp and solve mental problems. Ginkgo is also used by many millions for its ability to feed blood and energy to the extremities of the body, where it brings warmth and vitality. One of the male extremities is reported to be particularly affected! General Circulatory Tonic Ginkgo exerts a general tonic effect on the vascular system helping improve circulation, to the extremities in particular. One of the male extremities is reported to be particularly affected. Research suggests that ginkgo is effective in cases of peripheral arterial disease where there is arterial obstruction or narrowing, causing a reduction in blood flow during exercise or at rest. The herb's capillary-dilating effect is especially prominent.
Cognitive Enhancement This herb has been shown to increase cerebral blood flow, and therefore oxygen and glucose utilisation in the brain. As well as improving vascular function in the brain, studies have shown that GBE increases the rate at which information is transmitted at the nerve cell level, an ability that is thought to be primarily due to a positive influence on neurotransmitter function. Clinical trials confirm that ginkgo extract improves short term memory, mental alertness and overall cognitive performance.
Anti-allergic Ginkgo inhibits platelet-activating factor (PAF) - a major chemical trigger in asthma, inflammation and allergies.
Antioxidant The flavoglycosides exhibit powerful antioxidant capabilities, a factor which is especially valuable considering the damaging effect of free radicals on brain function. This information is not intended to replace the advice of your personal qualified Healthcare Professional. |
