One third of probiotics
or "good bacteria products", like Acidophilus, are found
to be worthless.
It's that time of year again,
and exotic countries are increasingly popular holiday destinations.
To help prevent succumbing
to traveller's diarrhoea, however, and thereby spoiling
an expensive and exciting holiday, we recommend you take
some of the best nutritional protection available.
Ian Marber, the
Food Doctor, says "I recommend taking a probiotic capsule
every day for two weeks before, during and after the holiday,
plus antibacterial, anti-parasite, antifungal drops, such
as
grapefruit seed extract, and a multivitamin."
But what
can you do, when one third of probiotics or "good bacteria
products", like Acidophilus, have been found to be worthless?
A General Meeting of the American
Society for Microbiology reported that only 13% of 55 products
tested contained all bacteria types included on the label.
Worse still, over 33% contained no live bacteria at all!
This is a shame, because optimal
balance of beneficial bacteria are key to good health, and
it highlights the need to choose a trusted brand of probiotics
to re-populate our guts. This is especially important after
use of antibiotics, high sugar diets, illness or stress.
Susan Curtis, a
natural medicine expert at Neal's Yard Remedies Therapy
Rooms in London, says: "A thriving colony of good bacteria
in your gut makes it harder for bad bugs to become established.
I take BioCare Travelguard capsules, which contain a probiotic,
garlic and antiseptic herbs, to help maintain intestinal
health and fight off bugs."
We agree that taking a capsule
of
TravelGuard every day while you're away, is a wise move.
However, even if you're not
holidaying, it's important to have a healthy balance of
bacteria, and for this we recommend
BioCare Bio-acidophilus or
Bio-acidophilus Forte.
