GALLBLADDER DISORDER

The gallbladder is just under the liver.  It concentrates and stores bile from the liver and this is used to help digest fats.  Two main conditions in the gallbladder are cholecystitis (inflammation, with severe pain in the upper right abdomen, fever, nausea and vomiting) and gallstones which may cause no symptoms.  When symptoms do occur, it’s often after eating fried or fatty foods, causing pain, nausea and vomiting.  If you suspect cholecystitis, see a medical doctor immediately.

Nutrition facts & Diet Advice for Gallbladder Disorder

For cholecystitis:

See a medical doctor.  Meanwhile, eat no solid food for a few days, but drink 1½ litres of filtered or spring water per day. Then drink only fresh vegetable or fruit juices for three days.  After these first six days, eat only grated or liquidised raw apple, and carrots, with a little olive oil and lemon dressing, for a day or two.  Please do not follow this programme without checking first with your medical doctor, especially if you suffer from other health problems such as diabetes.

For gallstones:

Eat a very large percentage (75% if possible) of your diet in the form of raw foods and vegetable juices.  For the Champion Juicer as used by the Gerson Institute, click on this text to see more.    If you can’t do that, eat as many vegetables as you can and add fibre such as flax seed, oat bran, guar gum, pectin).

Avoid sugar and anything containing sugar.

Avoid coffee, chocolate and soft drinks.

Avoid all animal fat and meat, eggs, onions, citrus fruit, corn, fried foods, spicy foods, margerine and refined cooking oils from the supermarket.

Investigate food allergies and sensitivities as these are often linked to gallstones.

If you need to lose weight, see Weight Management.

If you have pain, nausea or vomiting, you will probably feel better for just drinking vegetable and fruit juices for a few days, and have a coffee enema.  See Colon Cleansing for details on how to do an enema.

Most people with gallstones will benefit from a colon and liver cleanse.  See Four Week Cleanse and Colon Cleansing.
